Resident Evil Requiem: Phantom Chapter Cut
Capcom cut a ‘phantom’ Chapter 2 from Resident Evil: Requiem during development, according to director Koshi Nakanishi. In an interview with Denfaminicogamer, Nakanishi drew a parallel to a similar cut from Resident Evil 7‘s development, noting that the studio frequently revises or removes content early in the process. The director declined to specify what the excised chapter would have shown or which of the two playable characters it would have followed.
Creative Editing and Subtraction
Nakanishi explained that the team treats game structure like editing text or video: moving, adding, or cutting scenes during the rough draft stage. He emphasized that subtraction is a crucial part of the process. “Surprisingly, sometimes the overall result is better if certain elements are omitted,” he said, adding that while a producer may be upset by cuts, a strong final product satisfies everyone.
The game’s opening sees Grace Ashcroft exploring Wrenwood Hotel, a brief action sequence with Leon on the streets, and then Grace’s capture at the Rhodes Hill Chronic Care Center. The first third of the game heavily focuses on Grace, leading to speculation that the removed chapter might have expanded Leon’s early role or added more content to the Wrenwood or Rhodes Hill areas. Nakanishi provided no further details.
Community Puzzle and Upcoming Mode
Elsewhere in the interview, Nakanishi commented on Requiem‘s viral “Final Puzzle,” which the community solved faster than expected—within days, whereas he had anticipated at least two weeks. Capcom plans to add a new mode next month, accessible only after completing the main game.
